Mirage, or Sebastian as his family knew him, was born in Aztlan, son of a Catholic farmer's daughter, sired when she was raped by an adept Blood cultist after she caught his eye one day and than left behind once he was done with her. His mother always had bitter feelings towards him because of this, but never once concidered committing the sin of aborting him. So he grew up with his mother and her relatives, the entire extended family cramped into one small home. Sebastian always had an interest in the matrix, although he didn't have much time to play in it with all the chores that needed to be done around the house. When he was 11, the fact his family where Catholic became exposed by one of Sebastian's younger cousins, and the family took to the winds, everyone fleeing in another direction. Sebastian was left alone with his mother. In order to survive, he had to develop certain... unlawful skills. He started out hacking vending machines and automated motels for food and places to sleep, what little work he could find not enough to feed both him and his mother, who had become listless and despondent.
He soon drew the attention of a hacker, Popeye, working for one of the many Resistance movements throughout the country, who convinced Sebastian to come work for him in exchange for them looking after his mother. Working for the resistance, his hacking skills blossomed exponentially, rapidly learning all the tricks Popeye had to teach before he began developing new tricks all his own. Sadly, his hacking skills were not good enough, "the resistance needs everyone to give 100%" and Sebastien was sent out on missions, the fact he was still a child considered an asset for not drawing attention. It was during one such mission when the vehicle he was riding in crashed and his arm was horribly mangled. He managed to escape his pursuers by running into the woods and was rescued by the other resistance members.
His arm was crippled and useless, and the resistance didn't have the resources to grow him a new one, so they took a junky old arm they'd salvaged from some corpse and strapped it to Sebastian's shoulder. The surgery was excruciating and sloppily done, and it left him feverish for weeks. When he eventually recovered he was weak and his balance was off from the arm's weight. He began training in firearms practice as part of his rehabilitation, and he was astonished by how agile the arm was despite its looks, even better than his old arm had been before the accident. Sebastian favored his new cyberarm extensively, and the rest of his body never really got its strength back as a result.
Once he was considered good enough to get back to work, Sebastian began working harder than ever. He was getting older now, and the resistance began trusting him with more and more of their secrets. He learned of one of their technological suppliers, and began making side deals with him for matrix gear and programs, even picking up some augmentations.
While he was cluelessly recovering from the installation of his Encephalon, the resistance headquarters was attacked. His mother had been staying there, and she didn't even try and escape. Sebastian watched the video of her "execution" a week after the fact, and something inside him just sort of died. He learned from his contacts that he'd been tracked during of his hack jobs, and they'd gotten the base's location from his com. The resistance would not be welcoming him back if he made contact with him. Not sure where to go, he suggested Sebastian get out of the hellhole called Aztlan if there was nothing left for him there. A guy with his hacking skills, he could make it big anywhere. It just so happened that he knew a guy in Seattle who could hook him up with a fake id, have it all ready for him when he arrived. Sebastian would need to take it from there though, get established, and none of his old contacts would be there to help.
And that's basically what he did, setting up a node for himself on the matrix, calling himself Mirage. A hacker for hire. | |
